Even rough surfaces can be measured! How to measure an unpolished metal surface with an autocollimator?
This time, we would like to introduce
a method to realize “angle measurement of unpolished surfaces such as metals” using an autocollimator.
Normally, it is difficult to make accurate measurements with an autocollimator on unpolished metal surfaces because the laser beam is scattered.
However, a simple modification can solve this problem.
What is the method?
A thin, lightweight glass plate, such as cover glass, is sprayed on one side with water or oil to
“waterproof” the metal surface, creating an optically flat measurement surface.
This ensures that the laser beam is not scattered and has a stable reflective surface.
High-precision measurement with a laser autocollimator is
possible even on unpolished metal surfaces.
